Are you the proud owner of a large cat, such as a Maine Coon, Ragdoll, or Norwegian Forest Cat? Then you know that the scratching post for your big rebel needs to be large and sturdy as well. Especially for this, we have a wide range of XXL scratching posts. We’d love to tell you more about them, including tips and stories from one of our in-house cat experts. With this information, you’ll know exactly what to consider when making a purchase!
Cats are graceful creatures. But the bigger they are, the clumsier they can be. This is especially true for their scratching behavior. They can’t help it; it’s in their nature. It’s how they maintain their claws, mark their territory, stay flexible and strong, relieve stress, and burn off energy. In short: plenty of reasons to let them scratch away.
But where? Well, our XXL cat trees are specially designed for this purpose. We’ve carefully thought it through, ensuring that your cat (and you, eventually) will enjoy it for a long time:
If your large cat is still a kitten, you can already teach them to scratch on a post:
Here’s how to teach a kitten to use the scratching post and not your furniture.
Our graphic designer, product designer, and cat lover Bodi knows more about this: “Well, what’s normal, right? Whether they scratch for just a few seconds or a full minute, scratching posts help large cats. First, because they have plenty of space to scratch firmly, but also if they need a sheltered spot to retreat. On our XXL scratching posts, your cat can also stretch and stretch out thoroughly. Multiple cats can even lie on them at the same time. The Turnpike 200 is almost like a palace for your cat in that regard.”
Pay attention, your cat will have one or two favorite posts on the scratching post, which will wear out first. If your cat starts scratching the base plate, they likely need a horizontal scratching surface, such as a scratching mat
Usually, they don’t scratch the upholstery. If they do, you should discourage this by correcting them and guiding them towards the sisal rope.
Cats are all unique, varying in size, character, and age. That’s why we create scratching posts that meet all the needs of both large and small cats. For the active scratchers, the indoor cats, and even the adventurous outdoor cats who love to spend their days hunting. That’s why we also use character as a selection criterion for our range. Here, for example, you’ll find all the scratching posts for large cats of the ‘Sleeper’ type.
Our XXL cat trees are carefully designed to meet the needs of large cats and cat breeds. They are sturdy, towering, spacious, stable, and built to last for years. Our large scratching posts are designed by our in-house design team. Petrebels cat trees stand out from other brands due to their emphasis on design, color, and most importantly, quality. They are beautiful and durable, so you and your cat can enjoy your new XXL cat tree for a long time, safely.
Bodi can tell you all about the materials Petrebels uses for scratching posts: “We use sisal rope and carpet because the rough texture makes it relatively resistant to claws, and it’s a natural material. This rope is tightly wound in the opposite direction on the post and glued to extend its lifespan. Our scratching posts are covered with thick plush because it’s soft and comfortable, but also relatively wear-resistant, especially when glued. Plush also provides enough grip when climbing and descending, which is important for your cat’s safety. The platforms and base plates are weighted to increase the stability of the scratching post.”
All the cat trees in our range are designed with safety as a priority, including our XXL cat trees. Regardless of your cat’s size or weight, a scratching post should never tip over. That’s why all our scratching posts have an extra thick base plate, ranging from at least 2 to 5 centimeters thick, making them exceptionally stable.
We exclusively use extra thick and sturdy 6mm sisal rope. Thanks to this choice, all our scratching posts and cat furniture last significantly longer. This benefits both the cat owner and the cat.
The thickness of the plush also plays a crucial role in the durability of cat furniture. Active or large cats require thicker plush than their lighter or less active counterparts. We don’t make any distinction; we believe every cat deserves the very best. That’s why we manufacture each product with high-quality plush weighing 500 or 600 grams per square meter for optimal durability and comfort.
An XXL cat tree for your cat should be spacious enough to stand without blocking other furniture and stable enough not to tip over. Pay attention to the height, as cats love to climb and stretch. Observe where your cat likes to scratch and place the scratching post nearby. Consider a post with platforms or lookout spots, depending on your cat’s preference.
Place the scratching post in a quiet area and avoid locations near the litter box with cat litter or food bowls. Make the scratching post more attractive by adding toys. Some suggestions include: in the living room in a central location, near a window, in a corner of the room, or on an elevated spot like a cupboard or shelf.
When you buy a new scratching post, you and your cat naturally want to enjoy it for a long time – it’s more sustainable and better for your wallet. It’s important to maintain your scratching post properly. Here’s how to do it:
