Imagine going through a tough time and losing your cats as well. It happened to Ellen, who then had no cats for a while. Until last year when she adopted the two Siamese cat sisters, Pipke and Sofie, who bring joy to her every day!
Ellen, a 55-year-old resident of Amsterdam, has been living in Cuijk, North Brabant, for twenty years now. She enjoys her life there. It’s a cozy village, and she lives in a lovely corner house with a nice garden, alongside her husband Winni (58) and her two “girls,” Pipke and Sofie.
What beautiful cats you have! What breed are they?
Pipke and Sofie are both Siamese cats. They are also the same age (half a year now) as they come from the same litter. So, they are sisters, which makes it even more delightful. They get along very well – they truly adore each other and are always together. However, they both have completely different personalities. Sofie can be a bit reserved and shy. Pipke, on the other hand, is the opposite. She enthusiastically rushes towards everything and is not afraid of anything.
Tell us more about the special character of your Siamese cats!
Siamese cats are known for being very vocal, and Pipke and Sofie are no exception – they love to let you know what they want, especially when they’re hungry. Moreover, they are both mischievous, enjoy exploring, and love playing with us and with each other. They also adore cuddling and hunting anything made of plush material.
They are still very young, so they can be quite energetic. Every day, they have their crazy 10 minutes, but that can also last up to half an hour. Afterward, they fall asleep together, either in a basket, on their new cat tree, or on our laps. When they sleep, they purr loudly.
When do your cats make you laugh?
Well, actually, quite often! When they toss toy mice into the sink, when they make silly jumps and act a bit goofy. I find joy in them almost every day. They can be wonderfully quirky, but they are also so sweet. I went through a tough time and lost my two other Oriental cats back then. They lived to a good age, 15 and 17 years old, but I am still saddened by it.
And yet, you decided to get cats again?
Yes, after a year without cats, my husband also realized that I don’t do well without them. That’s why we went to a breeder who had a litter of Siamese cats. I love Oriental cats because I find them beautiful, and they have such a lovely personality. That’s where I met the two ladies, Pipke and Sofie. And I fell in love with them immediately!
Who came up with the names? Do you also give your cats nicknames?
Pipke already had her name from the breeder, and I thought it suited her very well, so I kept it as it was. I came up with the name Sofie because the breeder had named her Poppy, which I didn’t find appealing. I often call Pipke Pipi Longstocking or Pip Pip Hooray! When she’s naughty, I often just call her Pip. Sofie, on the other hand, is usually called Soof or Soofje.
I always refer to them as “my girls.” Because my cats are my soulmates
And if I mention them in a sentence, I always refer to them as “my girls.” Because that’s what they are to me, really. My husband and I have already formed a strong bond with them, and I’m sure it will only grow stronger in the coming years. They are so pure, and when I look at them, my heart lights up. They are our soulmates and truly complete our household!
The last question already: why are your cats the best of them all?
Let me start by saying that I love all cats. I grew up with cats and, except for one year, I’ve never been without cats. I had them at home, and when I moved out, I immediately got cats again, always in pairs. Cats, especially Oriental Shorthairs and Siamese, are truly special creatures. They are incredibly sociable, pure, and social. Both are full-fledged members of our family. I simply cannot and do not want to be without them!
Ellen was looking for a beautiful cat tree for her living room and visited the Petrebels cat tree showroom. She calls it a cat paradise because there were an incredible number of different cat trees. She was searching for a tall cat tree with multiple platforms for Siamese cats Pipke and Sofie, and she chose the Ramses 158 cat tree in gray. They are all very happy with it every day!
