The Origin of the American Curl
American Curls are rare. This breed is not extensively bred, and it hasn’t been around for long – it’s actually the newest cat breed in existence. The American Curl has only been around since the early 1980s. The first of these cats was a stray cat discovered by an American couple. These cats were extraordinary not just because of their backward-curling ears but also because of their notably affectionate and friendly nature. The couple decided to adopt the cat, and a few months later, a litter was born – the first litter of kittens with backward-curling ears. More kittens were born until someone finally decided to breed two kittens with these distinctive ears.
This breed is still extremely rare in Europe. However, in America, the American Curl has been recognized since the 1990s and is relatively popular.
The Character of the American Curl
American Curl cats are delightful, and many people adore them. They are active and playful – they enjoy pretty much everything, including fetching and climbing. Therefore, it’s advisable to have a stable scratching post. They love spending time with “their” family. American Curls are also incredibly curious. If their owner is working on a project at home, they will almost certainly receive a visit from this cat because they enjoy helping and exploring new things. They are incredibly adaptable to new people, other animals, and even a completely new home or environment. These pleasant traits remain throughout their lives – they continue to behave like a happy, curious, and playful cat.
Fun fact: American Curls love to assist their owners with household chores!
The Appearance and Coat of the American Curl
The American Curl owes its name not to a curly coat or tail but to its backward-curling ears. The kittens do not have these ears at birth – they develop curled ears at around one to two weeks of age. The ears unfold until the cats are four months old and do not change afterward. In terms of build, American Curls are somewhat square and of average size – they weigh between three and five kilograms. Male cats are naturally a bit larger and heavier.
The head of this cat breed is longer than it is wide and does not have a short snout. The front legs are slightly shorter than the hind legs, which are strong and straight. Their tail is as long as their body, starting wide at the base and tapering to a round tip. The coat of an American Curl can come in all colors and patterns. It can be short or semi-long. Their eyes have a walnut shape, and they can come in all colors too.
Caring for the American Curl
Taking care of an American Curl is relatively easy. Their coat may look impressive, but it requires little maintenance – brushing once a week is sufficient. The ears of the American Curl are sensitive, so you should handle them with care. Additionally, this breed may suffer from deformed or narrowed ear canals. Regularly checking the ears (or having them cleaned by a veterinarian) is wise.
Further Care for the American Curl
Every cat – purebred or not – deserves to be well-cared for with:
- A safe home
- Lots of love and attention
- Good food and always fresh water
- Clean litter boxes with quality cat litter
- Toys and a warm bed
- A scratching post for an American Curl
- Protection against fleas, ticks, and worms
- Vaccinations and regular visits to the veterinarian
Diseases and Conditions of the American Curl
Since this cat breed is not extensively bred and is often crossed with regular domestic cats, American Curls are generally healthy. These purebred cats have few hereditary conditions. However, keep in mind that the ears are a sensitive area. The cartilage in their ears is highly delicate, and ear canals can be narrowed or deformed, leading to various issues. If in doubt, always seek advice from your veterinarian.
How Long Does an American Curl Live?
As American Curls share much in common with “ordinary cats,” you can expect them to live between twelve and sixteen years if well cared for.
Buying an American Curl (Kitten)
An American Curl is a delightful cat breed that may have some health issues. It’s something to consider before getting one. If you still want such a purebred cat, consult your veterinarian first about the breed. Afterward, contact a breed association to inquire about certified breeders, as this ensures you’re acquiring a healthy pet that can have a good life. Prefer not to get a kitten? Look into shelters or pet adoption websites because many cats are waiting for a warm home and a loving owner. And, remember, you should never buy a cat from a backyard breeder or online platforms like Marktplaats.
