Cat lover Mariëlle (38) lives with Patrick (40) and their two cat brothers Ravi and Dexter. She adores her cosy family. So much so that her friends even organised a ‘cat shower’ for her. High time for an interview!
A ‘cat shower’, we are very curious about that! How did that go?
I always shout that I find it unfair that pregnant women do get treated to fun baby shows. And if you have cats that you love, nothing fun is ever organised for you. So when I got my kittens, I thought: just for fun, I’ll send a birth card to my work to tell people that I am a proud owner of two adorable kittens. And the response was incredibly nice. I even got some kind of kitten leave and all kinds of nice presents.
And your friends organised a ‘cat shower’?
Yes, that was so much fun! I got dressed up as a cat, got all kinds of cute presents – sweets for the kittens and a cute cake. Also, my friends had come up with all kinds of games. I was blindfolded and had to eat herring and drink cat milk. But of course they also came to cuddle and admire the kittens!
And what are the names of those two cute kittens?
One cat’s name is Ravi. He was already called that from the breeder and we left it that way. It’s a nice name. We named the other one Dexter because it looks like he’s wearing glasses and therefore looks a bit like the dot figure. But we also often call them by their nicknames. Ravi we often call Knaagje because he gnaws on everything. And Dexter we also call Dragster because he can race around the room like a car during a drag race.
Do they get along?
They are brothers to each other and have been super crazy about each other from day one. When Ravi can’t find Dexter for a while, he meows really loudly and Dexter comes to him. In fact, they do everything together. They like to play, cuddle and sleep together. They are now 7 months old and I hope they will always like each other so much!
What are their favourite spots in the house?
Ravi often lies on his scratching board. And Dexter really likes to sleep in the Parklane 175 cat tree we bought for them. I often find them together there too by the way – they play together in one of the hammocks or lounge on it together.
How would you describe the characters of your cats?
Ravi is a real sloth. He loves to cuddle, loves food and listens to us very well. He is also tough and headstrong. Dexter is more active. He can suck up to us when he wants to be petted, is stubborn and a real adolescent. But he is also cautious and likes to explore.
Can you describe a typical day of yours with your cats?
Ravi and Dexter both sleep downstairs. When I come downstairs in the morning they storm into the corridor to greet me and cuddle with me. I feed them, clean the litter boxes and play with them for a while. After that they often go back to sleep. When I come home after work, the cats recognise the sounds of my car and the two of them are waiting at the window. And in the evening, again, they cuddle, play and eat a lot until me and Patrick go to sleep.
The last question again: why are your cats so special?
We had already picked Dexter. And we ended up choosing Ravi because he was already close friends with Dexter and came straight to Patrick for a cuddle. Besides, Ravi was born on the day my previous cat died. We both thought this was so special that we had no choice but to go home with two kittens. And we are very happy with them every day – our cats are funny, unpredictable and sweet. And they give us a lot of love and peace of mind.
Mariëlle was looking for a sturdy and stable scratching post for her two Maine Coons. After all, these pedigree cats are bigger and heavier than ‘normal’ cats. She chose the Parklane 175 cat tree and is very happy with it! She loves the cappuccino colour and the cats can be found in it every day – they love to lounge on it or play cosily together in the hammock.
